RawSugar dead months ago

Techcrunch, Steve Rubel, Mashable and others are reporting that faceted search site RawSugar is closing shop.
Why is this suddenly hot news? RawSugar let all of their employees go back in late October. A mainstream news report that RawSugar is selling their assets is what appears to have prompted this. I thought bloggers were supposed to be able to break stories faster than mainstream journalists. So why is everyone reporting on old news that a newspaper just got around to publishing?
