Windows marketshare

Freshness Warning
This blog post is over 22 years old. It's possible that the information you read below isn't current and the links no longer work.

Two interesting articles on Windows XP and Microsoft’s methods to take and hold marketshare. Salon’s Scott Rosenberg tells how MS uses the default program associations for file types (.DOC, .HTML, .MP3. etc) to take marketshare for their browser, media player, and more. And ZDNet’s David Coursey has an open letter to MS asking them to let home users copy Windows XP for use on several machines. After all, the widespread pirating of Windows 3.1 is what helped MS take over the OS market.
