Legislative tragedy

Each time we have a tragedy in this country, lawmakers try to legislate away the problem. The result is often less privacy and more government control over our lives. The process has already begun in the wake of the World Trade Center bombings.

The Combating Terrorism Act allows the FBI to snoop on your Internet use without a court order as long as the government feels there’s an immediate threat to national security or they think someone might be trying to hack a computer.

And Sen. Judd Gregg (R-New Hampshire) wants to make sure that all encryption products have back doors that allow the government to access the encrypted messages.
