Data center costs are less with Sun?

Freshness Warning
This blog post is over 17 years old. It's possible that the information you read below isn't current and the links no longer work.

I was watching that speech by Marc Andreessen that prompted the Ning visit because I wanted to hear what he had to say about reducing hosting costs by using Sun hardware with Solaris instead of Linux on whitebox hardware.

Andreessen’s contention is that the reduced power consumption needs of Sun hardware makes it nearly half the price of Linux on whitebox. Sun’s Jonathan Swartz just posted an email from Andreessen that adds more details to those claims.
