Freshness Warning
This blog post is over 22 years old. It's possible that the information you read below isn't current and the links no longer work.

MGM, Fox, Universal Studios and Orion Pictures have filed a lawsuit that claims that it’s illegal to let people record shows based on name, type, or the actors. The lawsuit against SonicBlue contends that since Personal Video Recorders make it easy to create recorded libraries of television shows and movies, they violate copyright laws.

Of course the Supreme Court has already ruled that people are allowed to record shows for their own personal use. Apparently the studios think that new technology vacates court rulings.

It's legal if it's difficult, but illegal if it's easy? That's going to take some expensive lawyering to argue!
