Comments for Hamilton Beach Stay or Go makes terrible coffee

Excerpt: The coffee from this machine is vile. It tastes bad and smells worse. Read the whole article…

My buddy swears by the one he got from Starbuck$. Sounds strange but the coffee tastes fine, and this is a guy who buys beans and has separate grinders for caff and decaff.

Cuisinart has one for $99 and it's great. I got mine free with my Alhambra water service's offer for Starbucks delivery with my bottled water.

Timely, my wife and I were just considering purchasing one. Now I know what not to get. Thanks!

The only Cuisinart with a thermal carafe I can find for around $99 is this one at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000YTYGM/kalsey-20 There's also one with a built-in grinder for $140 at Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00006F2MI/kalsey-20 ) but it doesn't say if the grinder is a blade or burr grinder. Blade grinders give uneven results.

Adam, Are you using a gold tone filter with the maker? Filters will trap oils present in the coffee in them -- could it be you're used to a paper filter and are just not used to "raw' coffee? We have a Capresso thermal carafe usit and love it -- it's only an 8 cupper, but makes great coffee. I can't say I've tasted a huge difference between filtered and unfiltered coffee though. I suppose two other things to check are 1) the water (is it different or oily itself?) or 2) have you run any coffee cleanser through the machine? Maybe someone dumped oil where it oughtn't have been? Hope that's helpful... :-)

Yeah, I'm using a gold screen filter. I've tried cleaning the maker. The reviews at Amazon are no less damning of this coffee maker.

Too bad then Adam. Sorry to hear that. I'm a coffee lover, so I can certainly see why you're bummed out. Best wishes on finding something better for your coffee -- let me know if you need anything from my end.

I have had this Hamilton Beach Brewstation for the past 6 Months. I keep it clean and make sure the coffee valve is free of coffee grinds. I put a small amount of fresh coffee grinds in the basket filter, not to over flow. Well it will start leaking all over my kitchen counter on on my floor with out warning ! This product has a defictive coffee valve and will start leaking when you least expect it ! It just started doing this after 6 Months. Does anyone have an answer ? Thanks, Ron rwharris@comcast.net

I loved my brewstation until I cleaned it with a commercial cleaner. Now the coffee is weak and tasteless even if I increase the amount of grounds. I didn't change anything else. Also, I can't find out how often to change the water filter.

September 8, 2004 6:50 AM

Whew! I'm glad I saw this about using commercial cleaners to clean the tank on the BrewStation. I love this coffeemaker and the only problem I have found is that the coffee stains the plastic in the tank, making it difficult to see how much coffee is left. I made a paste with baking soda to scrub the sides and this helps to a degree. Does anyone have a solution to this problem that doesn't have the drawbacks described with a commercial cleaner?

About the bad tasting coffee made in the Hamilton Beach Thermal ADC, please give us a call at the Consumer Call Center and let us help you. Call 800-851-8900. I assure you this is not typical.

September 9, 2004 8:10 AM

Very good, Kim. I'm glad someone was monitoring the Web for mentions of Hamilton Beach. That's smart. But as much as I'd like to believe that this isn't a typical problem, I'm inclined to beleive it is. The reviews on Amazon say mostly the same thing -- something's wrong with this coffee maker that causes all coffee that comes from it to taste stale. Several weeks ago I called the customer service line to report the problem. They've offered to replace the unit, but I have to find a box and send it back first. We'll see if the replacement is any better.

This all makes me wonder: what would go wrong? I was interested in the HB Stay or Go because: 1) Good price point 2) Carafe is real glass/vacuum, not just two layers of stainless steel. 3) Showerhead has multiple holes, which should disperse water better than single hole. Main competitor now for me is Delonghi 24/7 50 oz. More expensive, also good showerhead, carafe not as good, has a nice feature that slows down the brew allowing coffee to bloom. So why would the HB give bad coffee? The only missing variable I can think of is water temperature. Anybody know what wattage HB has compared with competitors? What is the temperature of the water as it enters the grounds? It's hard to find coffeemakers that are hot enough (195+), but I wouldn't expect the HB to be any worse than your typical Braun.

I had a simple coffeemaker that would overflow from the basket. Two issues: 1.) It is very important to use the proper filter. 2.) If the carafe does not line up properly with the basket, the coffee will not drip down and it will back up into the basket and ultimately, overflow. I just bought the Hamilton Beach Stop & Go, last night, and made my first coffee, today. So far, so good! I am using paper filters, and not the gold filter, right now.

I received a Hamilton Beach BrewStation as a gift. The coffee tastes so bad that we cannot stand to drink it. A friend said that Hamilton Beach was aware of this problem and might replace the unit. Has anyone else had the same experience?

i bought a hamilton beach 2-10 cup removable swing out cone filter basket auto matic shut off and clock. big mistake, i always wanted a auto matic coffe maker so i can have coffee ready before i got up in the morning. i did nothing but drain all over my counters burned my son from running down the counters, swing door keeps opening by it slef, and yes i always make sure it is done rite. coffee ground all over, i never had coffee so hot before , its to much. it always makes noises, never shuts off when it is programed to. this is the worse coffee maker ever. i went to family dollar and bought a cheap coffee maker and never had a problem. and for the record i think i know how to make coffe, since i have been drinking it for 30 years. will never buy a hamilton beach coffee maker again or anything related to it.

I recently bought my Stay or Go coffeemaker at Target and could not wait to try it out. I am very disappointed with the entire coffeemaker. The pot leaks coffee all over everything and I am continually cleaning the counter, and the 2 travel mugs included are the worst I have ever encountered. There just is know way to drink from the cups without wearing the coffee.

I also have a Stay or Go. The problem with it is the red hose inside. It wasn't cured properly. I have tried every thing to get the ugly taste out, even put in a new hose. Nothing works. Hamilton Beach was susposed to get ahold of me, but never did, and since I sent the machine back to the service department, {it came back the same} it has an "R" scratched on the pot, and now the warrenty is good for only thirty days which I spent waiting for Hamilton Beach head office to get back to me. Called them again today, I'll just have to wait and see.

I bought a Hamilton Beach Brewstation and I love it! The coffee tastes fresh and it is so convenient! It took a while to get used to not having a carafe, but now we much prefer it to a traditional coffeemaker.

We just bought the Hamilton Beach Stay or Go Coffeemaker. We burn through coffeemachines every three months, they get fried from being on most of the day so we decided to change to a different model altogether. Having the thermal carafe is a great change, after the coffee brews you can carry it anywhere you need. I also like having the travel mugs to brew in. I have not found anything wrong with the taste, we have the optional filter in place and we use paper filters. We also use good quality coffee in it. I really like this coffeemaker and would definitely reccomend it to people.

I have a problem with the taste too on this coffee maker. I followed the directions in the manual to clean the coffer maker with vinegar. I had to do the cleaning process 3 times before the plastic oily taste went away. I’ve been using it ever since and I love it. Now it is four months later. I used the auto timer to brew a pot and my coffee and the resulted coffee tasted like oily plastic again. I wonder if this taste is caused by the water sitting over night. It shouldn’t since having an auto timer should allow you to prepare the pot the night before and have coffee in the morning. Anyway, I cleaned it again with vinegar, but now I’m afraid to use the auto timer because I don’t want to drink plastic tasting coffee.

I have a Hamilton beach commercial brew station, this is my second one, the first one lasted 6 months and had to be returned, just quit working. This one has been here about a year and now the red on light starts blinking as soon as the brewing is finished. I can;t find the book. Can anyone out there tell me what's going on. I tried to call Hamilton Beach but I'm at work and the wait is always 20 minutes or more. I can't stay on the phone that long. Help please. j

The best advise I can give is: don't buy it. It overflows, makes a mess, it's difficult to pull the pot in and out of the unit and it's not worth the money.

I've owned the Stay-or-Go coffee maker for several months. I use the auto feature every day with favorable results. I concider myself somewhat of a coffee connoisseur and find the coffee every morning just as I expect: perfectly brewed. I, also, like the thermal feature of the carraffe; I purchased this unit specifically for that feature. All that said, I am somewhat dismayed about being able to find replacement water filters. Interestingly enoughone cannot purchase them through the listed phone number in the Hamilton Beach website. You have to go through THREE layers of refered numbers to finally make a purchase. It seems like it should be a simple proceedure, but it's not. I'm wondering if some folks who are producing poor tasting coffee might have bad water filters.

January 8, 2005 4:30 PM

I recieved the Hamilton Beach BrewStation for Christmas and have found the coffee to be unbearable. I am not sure if it has a chemical taste or a stale taste or what is wrong. In the 35 years that I have been making coffee here at my home, I have never tasted such poor coffee. I am contemplating taking it back. Does anyone have any suggestions? Please help me!!

Scott
January 15, 2005 8:10 AM

This is a great coffee maker specifically because the carafe keeps the coffee fresh for a very long time. The coffee tastes good and anyone who says otherwise has something else wrong besides the coffee maker available to everyone else. The carafe goes in and out just great when you close the cap all the way. The water does not overfill if you can handle seeing the fill line. Mine, however did stop working after 4 months, which is how I found this site, and I will have it replaced under warranty. By the way, I recommend getting a coffee grinder with coarseness settings and a wire mesh coffee filter if you really want to test your taste buds. Wire mesh and coarse grinds taste better.

February 16, 2005 7:29 AM

I just received a Hamilton Beach Stay or Go coffee maker. If the water reservoir is filled with water from the vessel into which the coffee will brew, it will never over flow. If the cover of the carafe is tightened fully, the carafe will fit perfectly under the coffee basket. I have not used the thermal mugs yet nor have I perfected the brewed coffee to meet my taste requirements. So I can;t comment on these items. So far, I am pleased with the coffee maker's peerformance.

We too have had a lot of trouble with the taste and smell from this coffee maker- my husband has tried to wash it several times with the vinegar with no results. It was after this that he researched this coffee maker on the net and found many more complaints regarding the same thing- I called the customer service number listed on this page and the woman was rude and useless and apparently knew nothing of this complaint and had apparently never heard of it before- which i find hard to believe seeing as there are sooooo many complaints on the same topic. I would never buy this coffee maker!!

I wish I has read this site first. I had bought my first brew station at k-mart the door would not shut right. (should have been my first clue.) I returned it and bought my next one a wal-mart the first week it was great then it leeked everywheres. I had this pot only 3 months. I only run water in it so what is up with this? For the money you pay it is a big rip-off. Does anyone have an e-mail address to contact them. please put it out there for other to use we need to get our point accross about a this bad product.

We are having alot of problems with the gold filter not being "big" enough. The coffee overflows if the coffe is ground to fine. It gets stuck in the outlet and we then can't shut it off. Is there a bigger gold filter for this machine? Where do I get it? My counter tops are overflowing with coffee in the mornings....Thanks if anyone can help.

I thought it was just me. I have the H-B stay or go have tried 6 different kinds of imported coffee and they all have the plactic oily taste. I tried both mugs and the carafe and the coffee just taste like crap. I thought it was something I was doing. I even gave some of the coffee away thinking it was the coffee. Now I don't know what to do. Guess I should have gave away the pot and kept the coffee.

I have never been so frustrated or angered by a kitchen appliance before! Maybe it?s because I don?t like waking up to a kitchen floor full of brewed coffee. It seems that the carafe lid just plugs for some reason, as well as the lids for the travel mugs. It?s not the coffee grinds or filters causing this either. And it only happens every so often, so it?s a gamble every time. Also, the clock always goes fast, set it one day, it?s a few hours ahead the next. For the price, it should be better.

I have had this machine overflow the water. I may have ground it to fine. It seems to me that a coarser grind makes the difference. Unlike a Melita and others, fine grind may not be needed. Experiment with it. I too had a terrible taste. Problem there was I left a filter in with the grounds and had been away for two months. Try to remove that smell! So far I like it.

I think the thermal coffee is not as good as it might be. I suggest that true coffee lovers buy a SENSEO by Phillips of Holland. It is truely the best. I might add that I bought a pod that is refillable in Holland and I use regular coffee wich saves alot of money. I wouls suggest that you can also find this online as well. Go SENSEO..

After eight months, this coffeee maker stopped working on me. I have experienced the same "coffee all over the counter and floor" as everyone else here. The coffee also had a poor taste at first but that improved over time. Now the coffee maker is not processing the water. 2/3 of the water stays in the tank. It cannot be cleaned because the cleaning agent stays in the water reservoir with only a small amount being processed by the machine. It was given as a Christmas gift so I have no receipt and Hamilton Beach will only help me if I drive it to their authourized dealer and he can verify that it was manufactured within a year of today's date. Take my advice, don't buy this thing. A coffee maker of this price point shouldn't quit after 8 months and shouldn't leak all over the place. Hamilton Beach has a lemon in this product!

Wow! Was looking for a new coffee maker and the 2 that I have been looking at have had nothing but bad reveiws,(HB,stay or go & HB brewstation) Whats a coffee queen to do! I have had my Stay or Go coffee maker for about 8 months, and I love it. We drink coffee, a lot! And I was tired of the taste that comes with a burner always under it. I have not had the bad experiences that so many have reported. The only "bad" pots we have had were when grounds got in the pot. We used the water filter for about 2 months, and now we don't use one. I have noticed no difference. Ours makes great coffee, no overflows, and even keeps the pot hot all day when it needs to! I always rinse it out with very hot water between pots, and even be sure to rinse the lid and the basket as well. If I use soap, I make sure to rinse it several times and stand it upside down to drain out. I guess until Hamilton Beach resolves this problem, some will just have the luck of the draw??

I bought the Hamilton Beach Brew Station and I am having alot of problems with the grounds getting into the pot and then when you get a cup of coffee the grounds get stuck in the hole and the coffee keeps running all over the counter with no way to stop it. I am really disappointed because I like the cup of coffee that it does make - on the way occassions that there are no grounds.

I sure am glad I found this site before making a trip to the store. I just broke my glass coffee carafe' and liked the features of Hamilton Beach's thermal carafes or the Brewstation. I was all set to buy a Brewstation or the Stay or Go. Not anymore! I'll keep looking.

November 26, 2005 4:38 AM

I found this place looking for reasons why coffee would "overflow" in the filter basket and get grounds into the pot. I like a strong coffee, almost filling up the filter, while my wife likes a weak coffee and barely puts any in the filter. Sometimes there is a mess around the coffee machine and sometimes there are just grounds (or "fishes") in the pot. I have noticed, though that most of the time this happens is when my wife makes the coffee. Can it be, that, if you don't add enough coffee, the water will not get saturated with coffee oils and the filter will not work properly, not letting enough water through, causing the water/grounds to rise and overflow?

I've always considered HB an inexpensive brand (I have an old HB blender I can't complain about and know that Wal-Mart carries HB replacement parts) but I liked the carafe and travel mug features of this Stay and Go so I considered buying it for my husband. After reading all these comments about leaking (!), bad taste (eww!), online filter orders, and to top it all off: PLASTIC parts in a coffee maker??? (And are the travel mugs steel or plastic on the inside?) I've decided to purchase the best brand I can find. Coffee is important - a "several cups a day requirement" for my honey. We all need appliances we can rely on, you know we have the technology! So, here in a coffee lovers catalog I see this "Cuisinart Brew and Serve" looks nice, has a carafe, makes 12 cups (not 8), guaranteed not to burn while kept hot all day, and only costs $100! I don't think Cuisinart messes around with making crap products...but we'll see.

I have tried everything with the Stay or Go coffee maker as well. I'm so disappointed in this unit. Yes, it's soo nice waking up to a kitchen counter and floor covered with coffee first thing in the bloody morning! I've tried medium, fine and coarse ground grinding my own. I've used the gold and the paper filters to no avail. Coffee taste is raunchy and I'm about to just toss the damned thing in the garbage and be out the inflated price for this headache rather than have to ALSO put up with poor customer service. Please, please, if you want to keep your morning smile and that spring in your step first thing, avoid this like the avian flu! {walking over to trash can and fitfully slam dunking the "Stay or Go" in the trash can}

January 15, 2006 11:47 PM

I have to admit, I did have problems at first with the taste -- it was horrendous. Even after I cleaned it with vinegar, it tasted awful. After about two weeks it went away, though. I haven't had any problems with it spilling. I use the mugs everyday M-F, and the carafe Saturday and Sunday. Overall, I'm actually pretty happy with it, except for the need to buy the water filters online. I wish I could just run out to the store.

Just a heads up for everyone. Hamilton Beach has the WORSE customer service I've ever encountered. Their hours are set for their convenience (no evenings, no weekends)...plus they close their call center in the middle of the day for lunch! The rep I talked to was very cordial, but they can't do anything for you except send a new coffeemaker. This is a problem if you are disappointed in the model you have. As the director of a CS center myself (and past president of the international customer service association), I find this type of service abyssmal. I will not honor Hamilton Beach with any more of my money. Voting with my wallet, TaMara

Whew! Am I glad to find these comments. My wife bought the HB Stay or Go for my birthday even though I asked her not to get a Hamilton Beach product (she forgot). It hasn't been opened and I was beginning to consider giving it a try. Not after reading all the problems listed here. Just the customer service and online water filter issues are enough to make me take it back unopened. My brother and his wife purchased the programmable Cuisinart grind and brew to take care of family guests during the holidays and they worked great. Guess you get what you pay for. I never had problems with my Braun either until the carafe broke.

I saw the high rating of this coffee maker in Consumer Reports and planned to buy it but got a Black & Decker TCM400 for its price point and its glass/vacuum carafe. No problems with taste but in makes lukewarm coffee and frequently spills coffee all over the counter. It's not an overflow problem but it seems to just stop draining into the carafe?! I've tried to watch it and have seen some sort of bubble action that causes the redirect of the coffee onto the counter. I read others have overflow problems with this HB. Is this a problem with coffee makers with carafes?

Kenny
April 5, 2006 5:58 AM

I am with all the other and so is my Mom-- we both purchases one 6 months ago and both of us have the same problem-- coffee drips -- whenever it feels like it and the only solution is to keep a big tray under it so the coffee doesn't run all over the counter... Will Hamiltion Beach stand behind its product? They say we need the box to send it back-- we thought it was a good maker and could throw the box away! so what to do? not so bad for me I can afford another but my mom with a limited income can't...

I called HB and told them our problem and with in one week they sent me a new water=coffee container to replace the old one- that would not stop leaking- they were very nice and this one works so far so good and I will continue to complain if more problems... but they did sent it right away and also I didn't have to pay anything or postage... maybe they are getting the message they have to replace.. kenny

STAY AWAY from this don't buy HB. The service sucks! I emailed customer no service about our Brewstation (leakstation) coffeemaker. I told the the valve was cleaned with alcohol and a qtip it still leaked, I told them I did it twice, they sent me this canned email. I really hate canned email. I would almost rather be ignored. DO NOT BUY THIS PIECE OF CRAP!!! Thank you for contacting us! The following two trouble shooting tips should solve your leaking problem. Please try the following tips: 1. Check to make sure the seal is in place in the bottom of the brew tank. If the seal is missing, we will send you a replacement seal. 2. Check to make sure the seal is properly seated in the bottom of the tank. (Loose coffee grounds can settle under the seal in the bottom dispensing area of the tank. Grounds under the seal will cause the tank to drip.) To flush trapped grounds please clean the tank and dispensing area with cold water. Next test the seal by drying the tank and then adding a cup of cold water, hold it over the sink. If the tank no longer drips, the problem is solved. If the tank continues to drip, your seal may need to be replaced. If you need further assistance or a replacement seal, please let us know. Sincerely, Jessica Consumer Affairs

I bought a HB Brewstation, the first one was returned as after one month of use the pump was toast. This replacement is 1 year old and does not pump all water through. The last cup of water sits in the filter for an extra 10 minutes before dripping through. I've cleaned it numerous times with hot water and vinegar ... yum yum then I get a great cup of coffee. I'm looking to replace it and read Consumer Report which recommends the newer version of this. I enjoy the convenience of no carafe, just fill your cup. Does anyone recommend the Cuisinart Brew Central which has the same features. I must admit my basic Black & Decker SmartBrew never failed me and is less pricey.

The Brew Station is a great idea, but "fine idea Ollie, but it just doesn't work". The taste is terrible and medicinal. Repeated cleaning, using bottled water, changing coffee brands, nothing works. It was set up to provide our Alaskan Camper Customers with a warm welcome, but it can not be used because of the taste problem. Now I find this site and I draw comfort in that others are experiencing the same problem. I am not crazy, thank you.

We've had the Stay or Go at our office for less than a year and it pooched twice: --stops heating and pushing water through the filter basket, presumably because of over-heating. The first time we returned it for a replacement, and this too did the same thing after just 3 weeks. This is a very poorly designed product from the get-go: The carafe is shaped in a way that makes it difficult to pour the last two cups out, which is significant because you use the carafe to measure water and pour into tank as well as pour coffee. It's lid is REAALLY bad--easily cross-threaded, must be unscrewed to pour, etc.. Also, there is no valve under the basket, so if you remove the carafe before it is completely finished dripping, you get coffee on the the base, and from there, coffee all over everthing the carafe touches. Conclusion: HB is designed to look good on the store shelf, but has a very poor product life, poor ergonomics, and delivers trouble and inconvenience, not consumer satisfaction. Keep well away from any Hamilton Beach product. Caveat emptor!

A Real Disappointment !!! This Stay or Go Coffee Maker from Hamilton Beach is a lemon. I am tired of the unpredictable overflowing all over the counters and floor without warning. Also, we get a bitter cup of coffee even with some of the best blends on the market freshly ground. I am taking this back to Meijer on Monday and buying a more reputable machine such as a Bunn.

I must be the only one that likes the Stay or Go Coffee Maker. It's perfect for my use. I've had no problems at all with it and I use it every morning to make my 1 mug of coffee for the trip to work. I've had it for over a year now too. I don't understand the "unpredictable overflow" since what you put in the mugs or carafe should be the same as what comes out.

I'm not crazy after all! I just purchased a Hamilton Beach Stay or Go and have endured three days worth of burnt-plastic coffee. It's been making me sick, but my wife hasn't complained, so I've said nothing. Then I got to this site, and bingo! What the heck is wrong with this thing? I was happy to have a glass-lined thermal cafe (just about every other is stainless steel), but this plastic stuff is HORRIBLE. If it smells like plastic, the plastic must be leaching into the coffee. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!

It's nice to know that I am not the only one having crappy luck with the Hamilton Beach coffee makers! I am getting ready to send yet another HB Brewstation Deluxe back to the company. The one I'm sending back is the third one! All of them have started leaking all over my counter after anywhere from 1 to 6 months. And yes, as long as you have the box they will replace it. I am going to request an entirely different model this time though, unless they have an updated version of the Brewstation Deluxe that actually works right! I don't expect they would send me the difference in the cost if I take a lesser model, but, at this point I don't really care I just want one that doesn't leak!

I went through 3 of the HB coffee pots the Brew Station is horrible, I would call the company and they told me to cut the plug and send it to the company and $4.95 for shipping and handleing, I did this twice and the second one went bad, The light would blink, you couldn't program it and it started to leak, when I called them back for the 3rd one she wanted the model number on the bottom, when I gave it to her, she said am I sure I repeated it, she then told me they had sent me a older model then the one I had previously, finally they told me to send in the plug again, they said there would be no shipping charge this time, well I dont' think we even had this one 3 months and the same problems started again, all the water wouldn't drain to make coffee the light would blink and also and finally it just stopped brewing, I told my husband I am not calling anymore were getting another brand, I threw it in the garbage, where it belongs, I would never recommend this coffee maker.

Defective units: For those of you with a warranty unit of any brand of anything that have lost the receipt and/or box: Always call customer service anyway if you have problems! Often there is a secret date code on the appliance which lets them know how old it is. If you have a something which was manufactured recently, they will often honor the warranty without a receipt. Or maybe they just want to keep you happy. It's always worth a try. Hope this helps! I have a few friends with the Brewstation and they love it. Not a coffee drinker myself, just researching a gift.

When I called the company @1.800.851.8900 with the problem I was having with my Stay & Go, Cheryl was extremely accomodating! For the $9.95 shipping fee, the company is replacing my entire coffee maker. I will now have 2 pots for guests and I am thrilled! The customer service was amazing! I have really loved my coffee maker and it is worth the shipping to have it replaced. Treating any company employee with respect has always been my motto and I encourage everyone to be polite despite your frustrations. I have found the best treatment when I am at my best.

I had the company send several coffee pots as well, but they all made putrid coffee. Customer Service was quite polite, but in the end if all they are willing to do is continue sending the same flawed product, I'm not getting a happy resolution.

People buy from a discount house and complain when they don't get a quality product? I have trouble accepting opinions from someone so out of touch with reality.

Tom
November 26, 2007 9:18 AM

My previous post was unfair. This blog does at least serve as a reminder that although a company may make some good products they are seldom found in discount stores. Most items (by model #) found in these stores will not be found elsewhere.

Tom, I think your post is entirely correct. If you want good products, from coffee makers to cars, you have to let go of the cash. Walmart and other discount chains are, in my opinion, ruining this country and people are accepting their crappy products and service as the norm instead of the exception.

Adam Kalsey
January 22, 2008 4:01 PM

Tom and Weldon, I wouldn't expect a mass market product to be on par with a high-end product. I would however expect it to do the job advertised. I wouldn't expect a Toyota Camry to win drag races, but I do expect it to have enough acceleration to get me onto the freeway. Normally I use my espresso maker or Chemex to make coffee, but I bought the HB for occasional use, mainly in order to make larger quantities of coffee unattended when I'm entertaining. The problem is, the coffee maker doesn't make event palatable coffee. I'm not expecting greatness, just serviceability. And the Stay and Go doesn't deliver that. For what it's worth, my theory is that somewhere in the drip channel after the coffee is brewed, coffee is collecting there. This coffee becomes stale and dries out and the next time coffee drips through, this stale coffee ends up in the fresh coffee when you brew it.

I just bought a Stay and Go model and so far love it. This model (5247?) drips directly into mugs or carafe, I use a standard coffee filter (unbleached), good quality coffee with distilled water. It doesn't have a pause, but the spill tray helps. Hasn't overflowed even once, but one must be careful about the amount of water, making sure it is at the correct level for the container. Coffee is too hot to drink when first brewed, so all in all I find my model just fine. It's great to have a mug to go on a busy a.m. Although, I do use my own upgraded travel mug. The best thing about the coffeemaker was that I paid $25 for it at Wal Mart. I hope it lasts awhile! Was going to buy Cuisinart, but many complaints from friends about not being user friendly. My next model of choice would be Black & Decker. I had a B&D carafe model for over 15 years - performed flawlessly. The HB makes hotter coffee, which I prefer when using the carafe.

Jim
March 18, 2008 7:55 AM

I've had my stay and go for over 2 years now, I've really liked it. The only time I had an overflow was when my wife attempted to make one travel mug and put the mug on one side of the base instead of the middle! Otherwise, replacing the filters regularly makes a big difference. The only thing to be cautious of is to make sure when washing it that you use the same temperature of water, Mine basicaly exploded after being washed in hot water and rinsed in cooler water. Now trying to find a replacement carafe is very difficult and expensive, you'd think that Hamilton Beach would have a direct link on there site for it, but no luck.

We got our stay and go coffee maker for our wedding, and it has been great except for the cups. The cups came apart ( plastic inner parted from metal outer) quite soon after we got it. I e-mailed them and got no reply whatsoever. I am glad I came across this post, because now I see there is a number to call.

We bought a Hamilton Beach Brewstation recently. After you finally get the water poured in this little space it brews a weak pot of coffee and it wouldn't make a strong cup of coffee if you paid it to. I've tried all kinds and tried putting more coffee in, but it still makes weak coffee. Also, you can't cut it back on to keep it warm. It starts brewing the coffee all over again. We've never had this brand before so we didn't know. It costs too much to go buy another one right now though.

I have a Stay or Go and tried to replace the "Optional Filter" , but the way that the filter holder just barely sits in the hole inside the tank is suspect. It does not seem that that filter can really be doing anything. It seems like the water would mostly just go under the filter completely. The diagram in the manual on how it's supposed to look kind of looks like there is some kind of collar that sticks up in the tank that the filter holder would snap into, but mine just has a shallow indentation that just barely holds the optional filter holder. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

We bought one of these units 6 months ago, and have had the same experience as Adam. The first pot we brewed smelled awful, and tasted the same. The quality of the coffee is good (freshly ground), and I have never had problems like this with any other type of coffee maker. Cleaning the coffee maker thoroughly helps a bit, but there seems to be a wierd plastic taste leaching from the unit. There is definitely a flaw in the materials used, as this smell is not coming from the beans or water. As a bonus, both travel mugs store water between the walls of the mug if submerged in water. All in all, a truly useless product. It does look nice on the counter, though!

The Stay & Go is a terrible coffee maker. The caraffe allows coffee to go between the black plastic top and the stainless container. I feel it is a health hazard and will be returning it. (After brewing empty the caraffe and then turn it back upright and you will see coming back into the pot). Also the brewing is terrible. I don't think it gets hot enough...and its slow. The travel mugs don't have a closure for the top openings like most mugs do.

The Stay and Go makes excellent coffee. But that's a matter of taste. Perhaps you had gotten used to bad coffee and didn't recognize the improvement? I love the fact that whether I brew one mug or a full carafe and let the carafe sit the morning with me revisiting it, it's the same wonderful coffee. I had thought it was ruined during a routine cleaning. The digital display went blank and it wouldn't brew. But it was just wet. Before learning that, I went back to trying a Mr. Coffee, trying perc, and trying a Black and Decker.... couldn't stand them. When I learned the Stay and Go worked again, I was excited to be drinking the "good stuff" again. Love it love it love it. And yes, Hamilton Beach's customer support (when I thought it was broken) was absolutely wonderful -- calm, cheerful, sympathetic and willing to immediately replace the whole unit for cost of shipping if I wanted. Very happy with them. There are replacement carafes, by the way, online from other sources. At Hamilton Beach, you'll simply ask customer service. They'll help you.

First of all, I would like to express my deepest apologies to everyone on this post that has had problems with their coffee machine. Our family of six has three utterly devote coffee lovers who drink coffee as if it were a much needed blood transfusion, so we completely understand your frustration when the coffee maker isn’t performing as expected. We have owned our “Hamilton Beach Stay-or-Go Coffee Maker with Thermal Carafe and Two Travel Mugs” set for about 5 years now, using it at least once (sometimes twice) daily, and we have never had any problems with it during the entire time we have owned it. (For those of you wondering, our unit is model #45234, series #C4750E) We’ve brewed gourmet blends and grocery store brands alike, each with various grind textures, and we’ve never had a problem with flavor quality. So far, it has brewed perfect coffee every time with no residual “post-cleaning” or “flavor bleed-through” problems from previous brews. In the past, we have purchased coffee maker models by Mr. Coffee, Black & Decker, Sanyo, and even GE, only to find that within the first six months after purchase the units would either suffer some form of malfunction or simply die outright. Like everyone else, we did the “take it back to the store” and “contact the manufacturer” routines, and after several poor customer service experiences we quickly learned it was just simply easier to just cut our losses and buy a whole new coffee maker unit rather than deal with the hassles associated with store returns/ exchanges, or customer service / return shipping nightmares for manufacturer repairs. However, after going through several different models from each of these manufacturers, and always ending up back at square one, we decided to give Hamilton Beach a try… and we are so grateful that we did. The unit operates just as it was advertised, allowing us to brew into the travel mugs or the glass vacuum thermal carafe. To be bluntly honest, we rarely get the opportunity to hit the open road and use travel mugs, it was the thermal carafe that caught our attention and swayed us to purchase the model we have. The thermal carafe works exactly like the vacuum-sealed glass-liner Aladdin thermos my grandmother put my milk in for my school lunches as a child. I remembered how great that thermos was and how it use to keep my milk ice cold for hours, often it would still be cold on the bus ride home, so I knew the thermal carafe would keep coffee nice and hot for a long time after brewing without any external heat causing a burnt or bitter taste. Boy was I right! A big plus for us is that our Hamilton Beach coffee maker brews coffee hotter than any other unit we have owned, and it does so without scorching the coffee! Also, we usually brew our morning coffee around 7:00 am and have gone back for more later on in the day to find it still fresh and hot as late as 1:00 pm! In our opinion, the best thing about this product is the fact that there is no hot burner or heating element to deal with or get burned on. The coffee stays very hot in the carafe, which can be placed on any level surface for easy serving, while the carafe handle stays cool. We are so delighted by the thermal carafe’s portability and heat retention capability, we often brew coffee in it and bring the carafe to the picnic table or dining room when we host get-togethers, family barbecues, and so forth because the coffee stays hot in it for several hours afterwards! Now there are some tips I’d like to share, which may or may not account for our continued luck with this unit… COFFEE FILTER BASKET First off, we continue to use the basic plastic filter basket that came with our unit. We tried “going green” to reduce use of paper filters by purchasing the optional gold stainless steel metal coffee filter basket that was offered (which I’m told is now included with newer versions of this model as the standard), but metal filter baskets do not provide the quality brew we enjoy. Next, we have always used cone-shaped paper coffee filters (#4, by Melitta) because when you roast and grind your own coffee beans, the grind is sometimes on the finer side and a metal filter will not always capture the finer particles that a paper filter will. WATER FILTER Some homes, like our neighbors down the road, suffer from water that is heavily chlorinated or “hard” from excess minerals so they have to use bottled water in their coffee maker. Thankfully that’s not an expense we have to endure, or I dare say we’d have to give up drinking coffee! Our unit does use a small, replaceable Water Filter (part #80674, costs about $9.99 per twin-pack) which the user’s manual recommends be replaced after every 60 brews. Since our tap water is okay, we have found that replacing the Water Filter about once every twelve months is good for us, or once every six months if we’ve entertained a lot of guests during the year and thus used the coffee maker more than usual. These replacement Water Filters can sometimes be difficult to find since the HB Accessories website (www.HBAccessories.com) was moved as of May 2, 2008 (new URL is http://dev.hb.bytejam.com/accessories.html) but the new website always seems to display the message “AVAILABILITY: Sold out. Please check back often.” every time we’ve ever gone to it, so we usually go to Amazon.com to order ours. I looked on Amazon today and found these two links active to purchase this part number: http://www.amazon.com/Hamilton-Beach-80674-Filter-Replacement/dp/B0000U6PSG/ref=pd_sim_dbs_k_2 http://www.amazon.com/Hamilton-Beach-80674-Replacement-Filter/dp/B000HHETF8/ref=pd_sim_dbs_k_4 THERMAL CARAFE NEVER wash the thermal carafe in a dishwasher, always hand wash it carefully and make sure you do not submerge it! Make sure when washing and rinsing the thermal carafe, that you use the same temperature of water as the surface temperature of the carafe. If you hand wash it in warm or hot water and then rinse it in cold water, it will crack or shatter the inner glass-liner of the thermal carafe! Trying to find a replacement Thermal Carafe can be very difficult, and expensive, but we did an online search and the website below listed replacement Thermal Carafes for the Hamilton Beach Stay-or-Go Coffee Maker (model #45234) for only $24.99… hope this helps! http://abtecparts.com/hamilton_beach_coffee_carafes.htm Hamilton Beach Contact Information Our neighbor said the number she has used in the past to contact Hamilton Beach customer service center is 1-800-851-8900

Wow... Lotta unhappy people here. Im not one of them- not even close! I've had a stay or go, 8 cup, for several years now. Have had absolutely no issues with grinds or weird taste. Had one problem where the reservoir leaked the water during the night ( set it up to brew automatically at 6am). I called HB, talked to an actual person, they sent a whole new set up, gold filter and all. I am a huge coffee drinker and a picky one at that; only time we've had anything nasty was when we tried new kind of beans.

My Stay n Go Carafe leaks all over every time you pour from it...the only way to prevent it is to pour at a 136* angle into a mug with a wide top. Otherwise you get as much everywhere you didn't want it as in your mug. The gasket or seal is insufficient.

Several buyers of the Stop and Go coffee maker have complained about the pot leaking when pouring coffee. Mine did the same thing and we have owned it since 2009. After many times of cleaning spilled coffee off the stovetoop or counter I discovered a solution to the leaking pot. When I place the lid on the pot, I dont line up the push button exactly square with the spout. I offset it just barely to the right of the spout. this is with the handle towards you. Guess What!! No MORE DRIPPING EVER. Line it up with spout and it drips , offset it and NO DRIPS. Hope this helps

Mine lasted just under a year. The thermostat (KSD301-G) is rated for 100000 cycles, yet it died within 400. Unfortunately the only way you can get to the thermostat is by breaking the unit, which is a shame since it's a 7$ serviceable part. Loved the brew quality, hate the cheap components for the 80$ Canadians need to drop for this clunker.

I have had my BrewStation® Summit 12 Cup Coffeemaker 48464C for 4 months and, overall was pleased. Now, though, when brewing a pot it likes to leave 2 "cups" of water in the reservoir instead of cycling the entire amount through. If I try for 12 cups it does 10, if 10 it does 8, etc. Tried cleaning with vinegar as well as water and no luck. Just waiting to see if Hamilton Beach replies to my email, as I don't think I can find my receipt from Canadian Tire. I have read a lot of the same complaint so here's hoping.
