Kalsey...man you are a becoming more and more of a genius everyday. Honestly, though this tool helps kill one of the arguments people have about trackback and its inability to work on non-trackback servers. Job well done.

I've been thinking about doing this, but as a bookmarklet. I haven't gotten around to it, but you could make a great useful bookmarklet that would be fired when you were looking at your site. Firing it, it could grab the URL you were on (as the entry URL), the title of the page (as the blog name), and the text-selection as the excerpt (if you highlighted it with your mouse). Then you'd just need to fill in the title for your post and paste in the MT trackback URL.

Adam, would it be possible to integrate Simpletracks with the comment form? For example, I was thinking about how Matt Haughey aggregates his comments on other sites using a standalong TrackBack script, similar to Simpletracks. For Matt Haughey and others who want to aggregate their comments, It would be convenient if comment forms also contained a field called "TrackBack URL." Then the comment author could leave a comment and send a TrackBack ping all in one step.

That's funny, Brad Choate and I were discussing the same thing. There's a couple of problems as I see it. First, a URL is required. What if the commenter doesn't have a blog? Second, the TrackBack spec limits the size of the excerpt field to 255 characters. Third, MT doesn't rebuild archive pages when an entry gets a TrackBack. Finally, I'm not convinced of the value. If you want to have your trackbacks and comments merged into one, Simplecomments does the trick.

Funny, I implemented the same basic concept on June 12th, but in Icelandic, intended only for the Icelandic blogging scene. I called mine PingBuddy (http://www.anomy.net/pingbuddy/ ). When I saw your Simpletracks tool today, I decided to make an English version of PingBuddy, just for fun. (http://www.anomy.net/pingbuddy/en/ :-) My implementation has one feature that SimpleTracks doesn't have: If you add a Trackback ping URL as a query string to the PingBuddy URL, the that field becomes pre-filled in for you. Example: http://www.anomy.net/pingbuddy/en/?http%3A%2F%2Fkalsey.com%2Fcgi-bin%2Fmt%2Fmt-tb.cgi%2F630 I and others have used this feature to offer our readers a quick Manual-Trackback-With-PingBuddy link on each of your weblog entries. I think this just goes to show how great simple low-tech APIs like the Trackback Ping API are. Take care.

dude! first off, (overdue) THANKS for both your PingOMatic and your Trackbacks tools. legend efforts and public-spiritednesses, both. but i just noticed, due to a copypaste bollox-up, a tiny oddity in your trackback code which you might like to think about. Leading Whitespace in (at least) the "Trackback URL" field is interpreted as a newline ("\n") and returns an error. you might like to put a s/^[ \t]*// in there. (offered in the spirit of helping a community-minded coder improve code communityly, not whinging)

hey Adam, Great work all over, I have been working for weeks on a Trackback System on our Blog http://www.bhopu.com and in the meanwhile during the initial runs of the trackback at my side your Simpletracks has been great. It worked without me need to scratching my head until I provided my weblogz trackback ping url once (after working correctly one time). Maybe your mechanism doesn't send pings with standard parameter case, i.e. - new written blog's Title as "title", permalink as "url", Referenced Blog Entry Title as "blog_name", ID of Referenced Blog as "id", and Content of new written Entry as excerpt. Pardon me as I am little novice to this development field but can you please recheck your field's names' used in the SendPing Method of yours.

Adam Kalsey
January 25, 2008 7:51 AM

Netin: Since Simpletracks has been used thousands of times per day with dozens of blogging systems for 5 years, it's unlikely that the problem with your fields is on my end. Try reading the [Trackback spec](http://www.sixapart.com/pronet/docs/trackback_spec) and you'll see that "id" isn't a valid field. So if you're expecting a trackback tool to send it, you're not going to find much success.
