I think I'd rather get that than the constant hangup tho. In the office, we've been getting constant hang up calls (around 10/day), and we called the phone company, and they think that it's either a crossed wire somewhere, or a telemarketter. The caller ID always show up as unknown when they call.

There are systems designed specifically to find answering machines and leave marketing messages on them. I wonder if you're hearing from one of those machines, designed to hang up if a human answers. I believe it's illegal to deliver a recorded message to a person.

Apparently there's a new law in California that regulates telemarketers. As of July 1, 2002, AB 870 makes it illegal to automatically place telephone calls unless there is either a person or a pre-recorded message availble for when someone answers. That is most likely what is happening here. The predictive dialers are still working in full swing, but now when there isn't a telemarketer available to pitch me their crap I get this message. Information on the bill is here: http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/postquery?bill_number=ab_870&sess=CUR&house=B&author=wesson

I've heard that some telemarketers specifically target answering machines so they can leave their pitch as a message, and I always assumed that these calls were from those people.

I just got the same thing the past couple of days. Wow about 2.5 years later. Anyway I found this. http://www.hobbsherder.com/products/tele_tech.asp It doesn't help but answer one question. I hope you are not getting them anymore. BTW, I did a *69 and got this number: 800-272-4974 (800) 272-4974

I have gotten the ubiquitous "I'm sorry I must have dialed the wrong number" on about 6 calls in the past week. It is all the exact same voice (recorded) and immediately hangs up. I assumed it was a war-dialer just looking to identify "live" telephone number so they can be identified by the telemarketing folks to schedule a call back to you by a live person. It is really annoying and the fact their is no caller ID and no information on getting them to STOP calling is really frustrating. I hope this AB 876 law goes into effect here in California so these people will stop pestering me. By the way, just googled the "message" and came across this Blog.

800-272-4974 strikes again. What a waste of time answering the phone for these jerks...

Weird. I just got one today. I was waiting for a call from a buisness partner who's number I didn't know, and the voice sounded like his. I have a cold, so I figured he must of thought it was someone else. It didn't look like a local number, and it showed up on caller ID, as 'TOLLFREE NUMBER', with an 800 number. So I looked it up on google, then I saw this "wrong number?" thing come up. It was weird since I had only said hello, and he just decided it was the wrong number and hung up. How do I get these annoying sale calls to stop? And aren't there laws against these? IDK..

Well, same here, Paul, Libby and Billy Bob...same call, same number, same date and Google got me here, too. Wouldn't you love to 'jump' thru this stupid phone and grab that "thing" on the other end? I am from Rossville, GA., close to Chattanooga, TN. and I am so sick of this stupidity. To all of you...Have a wonderful week and a better week-end.

Well this number has been busy today. I've gotten 2 calls in the last 3 hours. I googled the number and it lead me here. Since it's a 800 number I just called it to see what happens and I got voice mail. I was very tempted to leave a message saying "I’m sorry I must have dialed the wrong number".

We are in Georgia and have gotten two of these calls today 10/30. Very aggravating since there seems to be a huge gap in the "do not call" list. Ideas anyone?

Got it several times in the past few days. Called the number back and left message to put me on their do not call list.

October 30, 2006 I've gotten 4 calls in less than 5 hours. I also live in North Georgia. This is becoming very frustrating. I've done the *57 call tracing and also registered a complaint with the do not call registry. Something has to be able to stop this aggravation!

These calls are coming from the Washington Political Group. If you google thewpg you'll see a few pages from the web site....including the one mentioned in an earlier post. The link here doesn't work because their website has been taken down...but if you click on the link for the cached page on google you get the 800 number, the address of the crank in Duluth Georgia, his address, email and dell phone number....I may just call this creep tomorrow. I got two of these calls today...but have been getting prerecorded political messages for about a week....an have vowed not to vote for any of the candidates who have had me called!

I had 4 of these yesterday (10/30) and also called the number back. I've filed complaints with the dncr and traced it so that the local phone co. could prosecute if it continues. What's weird is that my mom, brother, and myself have received these all yesterday and all within 15-20 mins. of each other. A lot of good the dnc law did, huh? I'm also in n.Ga. I'm with Steph Coleman-no votes for those who have called me. Hopefully someone will put a stop to this!

I finally let it go to voicemail rather than answer and it was a message for GA state senator Bill Heath.

These calls are illegal and you can actually make some money from them. There was an article in my local newspaper about them, defining routes you may pursue to not only make them stop, but to seek funds in return in court.
