The band gets it

I just finished upgrading a site for a local band. One of the things that I did was make it easier for the band to publish MP3s of their music. What’s remarkable about this is that the band is making their entire CD available in MP3 format for free.

Instead of worrying about people ripping their CD and putting in online, the band did it themselves. They understand that they need exposure more than they need the few bucks they’d make off of CD sales. By gaining exposure, they build a fan base that will attend shows and buy their music. They’ll make far more money from these fans than they would make from simple CD sales. They know that they stand a far better chance of creating a following outside this region and of winning a recording contract if people have access to their music. The best way to provide that access is through the Internet, not through a strong anti-piracy stance.
